OUTREACH VERSUS FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE IN MICROFINANCE PROGRAMS: THEORETICAL NOTES AND SOME EXAMPLES

This work shows, through theoretical and conceptual reflections, as well
as through many case studies, the need to go further in analysing the incompatibility
of two main goals of microfinance: the outreach to the poorest, and
the good financial performance of microfinance institutions. The initial results
of our research note that there is no perfect compatibility, but that there is a
trade-off between goals. This trade-off is nevertheless subject to how good
performance is defined.
